Mizey’s New Tune ‘Neon & Nothin’ Else’ Came Out Like A Whirlwind

So many of us inside (and outside) the country music realm, have been wrapping ourselves in the cowboy fiction within the series Yellowstone for a good long while now. That includes Jen Mize.

The epic scenery, long form storytelling, and the colourful language of even more colourful characters, has gripped so many worldwide and even made a few country artists careers take flight in the process.

You see the attraction for Jen ... girl from America transplants to the Sunshine Coast Queensland, tends to miss a few of the things she grew up with in the Mojave Desert on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Country bars, quarter horses, National Finals Rodeo, and the gritty men and sassy women that surrounded her childhood. Well, like so many of us, Jen got a little obsessed with Yellowstone.

“Being such a fan of the show, I started writing songs as if they were part of the series. I thought it would be a cool exercise to write as if I was given a brief from the show’s producers” says Mize.

“Neon & Nothin’ Else came out of me like a whirlwind after rewatching season one not too long ago, and paying close attention to the tension between Beth and Rip” Mize continues.

“They have what amounts to the eternal western love story. The only difference being that in Yellowstone, our female protagonist Beth, is not some submissive wallflower, destined to stay back at the ranch to play the role of the little lady. She’s powerful, whip smart, and ruthless to her enemies. I wanted to write a song for her. A song for Beth. A song where she can drop all those painstakingly built walls and expose her softer side, and open her heart to Rip, the love of her life.”
